Just a few months after Mayhem released the legendary De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, Xibalba released their own masterpiece, the hilariously named Ah Dzam Poop Ek. Despite the funny name, this album is amazing. Compared to their contemporaries in Norway, Xibalba brand of Black Metal is more mid-tempo and upbeat and the infectious riffs they play have this classic metal feel to them. I specialize in ultra rare and obscure albums, so I doubt I'll show up on their radar. I have a real treat for ya. This file contains two albums from two different bands who are both named Alatyr. The first Alatyr came from Belarus and released only one demo named Agoj. They play rather upbeat and catchy Pagan Black Metal that is quite reminiscent of early Nokturnal Mortum. The second Alatyr came from Slovakia and released only one full-length named Alatyr. They play a more ambient/depressive form of Black Metal that reminds me of Trist. Which one is the better Alatyr, you ask? When I tell people that I love this album, they look at me like I'm hopped up on meth. Sure, the keyboards are corny and sound like video game music at times, the production is real muddy, and the guitars sound like they were played through the tiniest amps ever, but this album has a certain charm that draws me to them. It reminds me of my adolescence and how I always wanted to form my own metal band armed only with my spirit and determination.<br /><br />NOTE: For some strange reason, the last two or three seconds of every song are missing and I don't know why. This was the only good quality rip I could find on the net, so don't blame me, blame the rip. Our only major contributions to metal are Manilla Road and Origin. On top of that, it's really hard to be a metalhead in Kansas. Most of us are too poor to afford instruments, so we can't form our own bands, and all the major metal bands and festivals avoid this state as if the people were infested with AIDS. The guys who own <a href="http://www.themetalinquisition.com/">Metal Inquisition</a> complain about how, back when they were teenagers in Brazil, they had to rely on three-year-old issues of Metal Hammer in order to learn about metal. Where I come from, we don't even have Metal Hammer. Not only that, but the closest thing we have to a record store is Wal-Mart, and their metal section is almost non-existent. The most underground band they have available is Megadeth. This is why I created the Treasure Hoard in the first place. I wanted to help out people who were in situations just like my own.<br /><br />But I'm not here to give you my life story. I'm here to bring you some great, obscure metal. You remember how I said that there aren't many metal bands in Kansas? Well, there are a few — although they're really obscure — and one of the best, most obscure bands is Anwyl. They formed in 1997 in Hutchinson, which is only an hour's drive from where I live. Whereas everyone else was playing country or some other popular bullshit, Anwyl was crafting vicious, violent, take-no-prisoners Blackened Death Metal in the vein of Blasphemy, Black Witchery, and Angelcorpse. The Kansas crowds had no idea what to make of them. Many people decried them as servants of Satan, but the chosen few who attended their shows constantly absolutely adored them. They kept playing furiously until 2011 when their guitarist tragically committed suicide. I want to pick up physical copies of their work, but they're ridiculously rare, so I'll just settle for the mp3s instead. There are so many intricate elements that intertwine so perfectly, from the guitars and drums that defined early 90s Death Metal to the acoustic sections to the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RI0K-ABVpcQ">saxamaphone</a>. There are also some clean vocals on here. They may turn a few people off, but I love 'em. They even play some smoothe jazz, which serves as a nice break from the Death Metal parts (see "Reborn from the Infernal Ashes"). Deep Mountains is an Atmospheric Black Metal band from China, and they released their self-titled debut EP just last year. Of all the Black Metal albums I've listened to, this is one of the most beautiful. They do play Black Metal, but this album is, at its heart, an acoustic affair that is reinforced by electric guitars, all of which are fantastic. Some of the riffs even remind me of metal from the 80s. Oh yes, Varg ain't the only murderer who has produced Black Metal. However, Khnuth is far better than anything Varg has put out after he was released from prison. The band's final album, В Седьмом Кругу Безысходности, is quite similar to what Burzum was back in the good old days. It's cold, bleak, raw, and the distortion will tear you to shreds. All the brutalities of prison life are made manifest by this album. Dostoyevsky once wrote a short story called "The Priest and the Devil" on the walls of his cell in a cold Siberian prison. After listening to this album a few times, I have come to the conclusion that Hinsidig sounds like a cross between Nyktalgia and Austere. As for the music, the guitars aren't as powerful as they were on the last album — mostly owing to the fact that they pulled back on the distortion — but they more than make up for it with improved musicianship. The production is cleaned up, the ambient elements are more prominent, and the bass line is audible. If Veil was Russian instead of American, he would be right at home with the Blazebirth Hall, not because of his ideology, but because of the beauty that resonates with his music. Lundr poured his heart and soul into this record. He wanted to make sure that everyone in the metal scene would hear him. This will NOT be an easy album to listen to, for it is both terrifying and heartbreaking, but this is all intentional. The music is dark because the subject it deals with is dark. Lundr's message resonates with each riff, each blast beat, each growl, each scream. The government has failed you. Society has failed you. They care not for your well-being. Your tears mean nothing to them. Theistic Inferno was a Blackened Doom Metal band from Russia that released only two demos before vanishing into the Siberian snowstorms. Their Metal Archives page also says they released a full-length called Albedo, but I can't find any information about it. Oh well, I'm content with just listening to Embryo. There was a lot of great elements on this demo, including wondrous, atmospheric keyboards and clean vocals. Blind One Came is one of the most unique Death Metal bands I've heard in a long time. They don't conform to the mindless and repetitive shredding and blasting of most of their peers. I really liked it, so I decided to post it as well. This is the first demo from a new band called Obolus, who formed just this year. They play a faster-paced version of Depressive Black Metal similar to Anti or Nyktalgia, and at times, the riffing reminds me of Elysian Blaze. The production is that fuzzy lo-fi affair we all know and love, and the atmosphere is suffocating, but in a good way. Overall, this is a brilliant start, and I eagerly await their future releases. It's really hard to explain, but it sounds like it would be right at home in a movie about the Outback. One of the best new ones would have to be Wodensthrone form England. Their debut album, Loss, perfectly expresses how the beauty of nature is being defiled by the hands of greed and how we must save ourselves from being destroyed by our own stupidity. To lose nature is to lose the beating heart of the Earth. Then the metal begins, and the first elements you hear are guitar riffs that sound like they came down from the heavens. Their third demo, Nachtschwarz, is the easiest on the listener's ears, and is also the most musically developed. As you can tell by their name, what really separates these guys from most other Death Metal bands is that the leads singer is a member of the Tsimshian people, and he even sings a few of the songs in his native tongue. The production is definitely much harsher and more distorted this time around, and it multiplies the viciousness and chaos tenfold. Just listen to the song I am the Wrath of Gods and the Desolation of the Earth to see what I mean. However, they've shown they're not afraid to slow things down a bit, as can be seen on the song More of Fire Than Blood. Overall, this album shows that the band is evolving. For those of you who don't go onto the internet very much, American Death/Doom band Disma recently released their critically-acclaimed debut full-length, Towards the Megalith, and that praise is definitely well-deserved. This album is filled to the brim with thick, chunky riffs that spawn an orgy in my ears, slow sections brimming with evil, an otherworldly atmosphere, and to top it all off, the growls are performed by Craig Pillard, the former vocalist of Incantation. In 2007, Gorruth, the main brain behind Temnozor, got together with fellow Temnozor bandmate Syvagir to form Walknut and record their debut album, Graveforests And Their Shadows, in the same year. Musically, it sounds like a modern day version of Branikald with an even greater focus on atmosphere, which is fine by me, because the more bands that sound like Branikald the better. That album was Folkstorm of the Azure Nights by Temnozor. The band was formed back in 1996 by a man named Gorruth, who also happened to be a member of the Blazebirth Hall, so it came as no surprise that Kaldrad would help him produce this album. What resulted from this collaboration was something brilliant. Out of all of Temnozor's albums, I consider this one their best. Of all the elements of this album, the vocals truly stand out above the rest. Aside from Kaldrad's signature barks are the majestic clean vocals of Petr. Not only can he make the Russian language sound beautiful, he can also sing in English better than anyone I know, as can be heard in the song Watch the Falcons Fly. In my opinion, this is his best album. Everything about it just seems to fit so perfectly together, from the hypnotic 14 minute long guitar intro to the cloudy production to the razor-like riffing to Kaldrad's signature rasp. This was the last Branikald album I found enjoyable. One year after its release, Kaldrad went full-blown Nazi and the quality of Branikald's music went straight downhill as a result. Normally, I hate endless repetition, but with Branikald, it goes from being a nuisance to being a wondrous, otherworldly experience, and Rdjandalir was the first album to really display this beauty. Before the inventory was destroyed, the band scrounged up all the copies of this album they could and sold them all at their last gig in 2000 for ridiculously low prices. Ever since that time, The Entity has become one of the most prized albums in existence, fetching prices as high as $2000 on eBay. Luckily, you won't have to pay anywhere near that much for this download.<br /><br />This album needs to — nay, deserves to be reissued. This album is completely different compared to his last album, The Haunted House. The most obvious difference is that it sounds much cleaner. The distortion is less like a monstrous roar and more like what you would find in the rest of Black Metal, but it still retains the soul-crushing melancholy Pyha is famous for. Another difference is the vastly improved musicianship, as the riffs and drumming are much more complex, and there's even audible bass. Since The Haunted House was recorded in December 2001 back when he was about 12, this means he's about 22 now, and with it, his musical skills have improved drastically. I know this sound a bit premature, but I'm nominating Pyha's 맞불놀이 (for the record, I don't know what that says in English, so don't ask me) for best Depressive Black Metal album of 2011.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Addendum</span>: Although I maybe wrong about the whole Best Depressive Black Metal Album of 2011 thing. It was quite unorthodox compared to what I heard on their self-titled debut, what with all the ambient elements and the classic instruments. But as I listened to it repeatedly, the pieces started to fall together. This album is basically a chronicle of the fall of modern civilization and of mankind's return to nature in a world without government, and the music is a perfect reflection of this tale. I especially grew to enjoy the banjo section at the end of The Death of Baldr and the Coming War. Oh, did I also mention that this album has banjos? They're a highly-skilled, sci-fi themed Death Metal band from Sweden who sound more akin to the bands from Florida. In essence, Crystal Age is the Swedish Nocturnus. Tortured Voice is a band formed in 2009, and they released their first demo, A Hate to the Weak, just last year. It contains simplistic, slow-paced Black Metal and a well-managed production. Although the performance is amateur and although the music is stuff we've all heard before, since this is from Mongolia of all places, they might as well be considered innovators.
